Online Dating Scam: Student, 19 Years Old, Sentenced 30 Months in Prison

 


 A 19-year-old student at Keta Business College is behind a bar allegedly tricking him into using nude photos of his lover: Spend 30 months. Prisoner Obed Dzorgbenyui Adehe deceived the victim by pretending to be a  nurse at Ho Technical University on Facebook. 

 Online Relations: Adehe's victim, also a man, and a Ghanaian resident of the United Kingdom  who  thought Adehe was a woman at the time, exchanged contacts and began an online relationship with prisoners. During the course of the relationship, Adehe secretly recorded the victim's nudity during a WhatsApp video call, according to Prosecutor 

First Prompt: Adehe later contacted the victim using a different phone number and demanded that they pay $ 833.33 in Bitcoin  to delete the video they had already posted on social media. Prosecutor Fuseini Yakub, assistant superintendent (ASP), told the Accra District Court where Adehe was charged that  the victim paid 5,020 GH ¢ in two installments out of fear. The first amount, GH ¢ 2,000, was paid on April 24, last year, and the second amount, GH ¢ 3,020, was paid on April 27, via the MTN mobile phone number. 

 Further Requests: Unsatisfied, Adehe once again threatened the victim to buy the iPhone 11 Pro. In response to this request, the victim decided to inspire courage to report the incident to the Cybercrime Unit of the Accra Criminal Investigation Bureau. This resulted in Adehe being arrested in Tema and his iPhone XR phone used to communicate with the complainant was collected for forensic examination. 

 Adehe was indicted: On September 16, last year, Adehe was indicted in a court presided over by  Ellen Ofeiae. He was charged with  sharing intimate images three times without consent, sexual extortion, and fraudulent fraud. However, while denying  sharing intimate images without consent and sexual extortion, he pleaded guilty to fraud due to false existence. Prosecutor later decided to withdraw the crime of sharing intimate images and sexual abuse without consent  after pleading guilty to  false fraud. 

 Adehe declared: Therefore, the court ruled Adehe alone. He was subsequently sentenced to two years and six months in prison for forced labor. 

Other Cases: This is not the first time a student has been convicted of this crime. In May 2020, the Akra District Court sentenced a 24-year-old student at Asymphos University of Education to three years in prison for forced labor. Francis Aggray, currently in prison, was convicted and blackmailed 1,500 GH ¢ from her after threatening to distribute a nude video of his policeman's lover and her photo. Prior to, the Kanesier District Court  sentenced self-proclaimed photo editor Richmond Clement Covina Avega to 30 days in prison. 33-year-old she posted a nude video of her girlfriend online and used it to extort money from her.  As part of the verdict, he was ordered to  pay a fine of 4,800 GH ¢ for the violation.
